Last night’s BSB TV stream offered a candid look at how heavy music intersects with global festivals and national platforms. The conversation centered on practical realities rather than hype, giving viewers insight into how artists are evaluated beyond local scenes.
The stream included: FivebyFive, Lilac & Lotus, FieldHockey, Surefire, Carry The Day, Screwed Ends, Approaching Autumn, Penny Fountain, All Black Horizon, The Maiden Voyage, Alyxx, and Just Happy To Be Here.
David Silbaugh, Summerfest Talent Buyer, spoke openly about the complexity of booking for a festival as large and diverse as Summerfest. He explained that the challenge is not whether heavier artists are good enough, but where they fit within a lineup designed to serve audiences spanning multiple genres. Stage placement, crowd flow, and audience expectations all factor into those decisions. Importantly, Silbaugh did not suggest that heavier Milwaukee artists could not belong on Summerfest stages. Instead, he emphasized that large festivals require careful curation and balance, especially when programming across rock, pop, hip-hop, electronic, and legacy acts.
When the conversation shifted to radio and broader exposure, Silbaugh pointed to bands like FivebyFive (Silbaugh's Industry Pick) and Surefire, noting that both already sound like they should be airing on Sirius XM’s Octane. He expressed genuine surprise that they are not, citing their heaviness paired with structure and accessibility as qualities that translate well beyond local reach.
The discussion underscored a larger point. Many heavy bands are not lacking in quality or readiness. The question is often placement and infrastructure, not talent. Platforms like BSB TV help bridge that gap by creating spaces where artists can be heard, contextualized, and evaluated by people who actively shape larger stages and radio. Introducing heavier music stages to festivals has been anticipated for a long time, and fans are eager for it.
Track of the Week: Lilac & Lotus
The stream also highlighted Lilac & Lotus as BSB TV’s Four Chord Music Track of the Week winner. The selection reflected the platform’s focus on artists who pair emotional depth with intentional songwriting rather than relying on volume alone.
Lilac & Lotus stands out for its ability to balance space and weight, revealing delicacy within heaviness instead of flattening it. The track moved the audience because it demonstrated control, clarity, and a strong sense of identity. Those qualities make the music adaptable without compromising its core.

Last night’s BSB TV stream made one thing clear. The heavy music scene is already operating at a level that demands attention. The work is there, the discipline is there, and the momentum is building. Recognition and inclusion are no longer a question of "if," but "when."
